PM Says No Stopping Development In Abaco

Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Hubert Ingraham addresses the Abaco Chamber of Commerce and Abaco residents at a meeting at Faith Convention Centre, Marsh Harbour on Friday. (BIS Photo/Sharon Turner) While indicating that development will not stop in Abaco despite concerns some residents have about the environment, Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham on Friday underscored his government’s plan to approve projects that are best suited for the island and its surroundings, and restated his administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability. By Tameka Lundy Opposition leader and former prime minister Perry Christie is questioning whether the developers of the Baker’s Bay Resort in Guana Cay are actually returning a “substantial amount” of land to the government, despite Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham announcing otherwise.

Duncombe fears impact of developments

While the government has a number of tourism-related projects on the drawing board that would hopefully pump millions into the Bahamian economy once completed, a local environmentalist is expressing concern about some of them. On Tuesday, Sam Duncombe, Director of the ReEarth environmental organization said she had some reservations about several proposed developments, claiming that they could damage the environment or pollute the water table when the work gets underway.
