44 Days and Counting

It has been 44 days since the Deep Horizon well exploded, dumping 75 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, to date. Revised estimates from video calculations confirm that the volcano spewing oil from the Gulf ocean floor is leaking at a rate of 1.68 million gallons a day, The Gulf and all the waterways it intersects may be expected to be impacted by 200 million gallons of oil as the “Macondo field” is estimated to contain some 50 million barrels of oil. Nassau, The Bahamas August 22, 2008 On August 20 a newly formed group, Young Bahamian Marine Scientist wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Hubert A. Ingraham asking him to secure their environmental future by taking first steps to:

• Put a hold on both land and sea dredging involved with the Albany project until there is a full public review because once done, the damage to the beach, coastline and water table is irreversible • Protect all freshwater resources from contamination • Stop immediately the construction of channels, canals and/or construction on or through beaches • Enact appropriate legislation to establish minimum setbacks for construction near the coasts and to prevent the construction of channels and/or structures on or through Bahamian beaches.

Dear Editor:

I write in response to statements made by Christopher Anand of the Albany development reported on 14th August, 2008 as quoted in a local daily. Mr. Anand questioned the qualifications of the Director of reearth, Sam Duncombe.

First, let me start by giving you my qualifications. My degrees are in Environmental Technology and Oceanographic Technology. I have over 30 years of experience dealing with environmental issues affecting The Bahamas within a system that is for all intents and purposes corrupt. (more…)

Albany Managing Partner Christopher Anand is questioning local environmental activist Sam Duncombe’s qualifications in environmental studies and claims she single-handedly instigated most of the company’s bad press.

Duncombe, who is the director of reEarth, a local environmental advocacy agency, has been a vocal critic of the Albany development, calling it “unsustainable and irresponsible.” (more…)
